When in Doubt, Châteauneuf Makes Friends

There are certain bottles that quietly solve problems. You’re not quite sure what you’re cooking tonight. You’re not sure who’s coming over. You want something serious enough for a meal but easygoing enough to enjoy on its own. In my home, one of the most reliable answers to that question is always the same:

Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In this case, the 2023 Clos du Mont Olivet.

From one of the classic family estates of the appellation, Clos du Mont-Olivet produces exactly the kind of Châteauneuf-du-Pape that made the region famous in the first place: generous without being overbearing and remarkably adaptable at the table. The 2023 vintage captures that spirit beautifully. Built largely around Grenache with supporting roles from Syrah, Mourvèdre, and other traditional Rhône varieties, the wine has that classic Châteauneuf profile of ripe red berries, black cherry, dried herbs, warm spice, and a little whisper of garrigue that transports you straight to the southern Rhône.

But what has always made Mont Olivet such a perennial favorite is balance. There’s plenty of richness and depth, but the wine never feels heavy. The tannins are supple, the fruit is expressive without being jammy, and there’s enough freshness to keep everything lively from the first sip to the last glass.

Which is why this bottle is so easy to recommend. It’s excellent with food but it’s just as satisfying poured into a glass on its own while you figure out what dinner is going to be. Some wines demand a plan. Châteauneuf makes friends instead.

And if you’re standing in front of the rack wondering what to open tonight, that’s really the point. A bottle like this doesn’t require an occasion. It creates one. Open a bottle, share it, and make a friend.

95 Points, James Suckling
A fleshy, driven and velvety Chateauneuf-du-Pape, exhibiting aromas of crushed strawberries, forest berries, warm herbs and baking spices. It's full-bodied with fine tannins and generous fruit, yet it remains in control, with a refined texture and a long, lively and flavorful finish. Delicious bitter-orange aftertaste. Drink or hold.
