White, German Pinot Noir. Yes Really.

White, German Pinot Noir. Yes Really.

Weingut Hexamer is best known for their crystalline Rieslings from the Nahe, but their Weissherbst (a German tradition of pale Pinot Noir made from a single variety, harvested and pressed with extreme delicacy) has quietly built a devoted following. In 2022, the wine is a feather-light, transparent, almost colorless Pinot Noir that is not a rosé, but something far more singular. It’s Pinot Noir stripped back to its purest expression, all red berry perfume and cool minerality, carried on the lightest possible frame. Think still blanc de noirs Champagne vin clair. Very fascinating wine.

This is Burgundy-style finesse meeting German precision. The grapes are pressed so gently that only the faintest tint is extracted, creating a wine that looks like white gold in the glass but tastes unmistakably like Pinot Noir: alpine strawberries, wild herbs, rose petal, crushed stone. The freshness is electric, the finish clean and persistent, and the entire experience feels like drinking Pinot Noir through a prism.

Hexamer produces tiny quantities, and year after year the Weissherbst is one of those insider wines that vanishes almost instantly—claimed by those who already know and those lucky enough to be introduced. It is the sort of bottle that opens conversations at the table, surprises seasoned wine drinkers, and converts skeptics who never imagined Pinot Noir could be this ethereal.

The 2022 edition is the most refined in recent memory, shaped by a balanced vintage that preserved brightness while delivering beautiful aromatic lift.
