Wilson Daniels Day 1, Champagne Gosset

Moving on to week three of importer focuses, I am pleased to introduce Wilson Daniels Luxury Wine Importer. This is a very different story than our last two focuses. Rather than beginning as a small importer as did RWM and KLWM, Win Wilson and Jack Daniels (not the Sour Mash brand) were trying to increase the image of California wines on the world stage beginning in 1978 as exporters and brand managers. As successful early proponents of Chappellet Winery, Schramsberg Vineyards, and Hyde de Villaine among others, WD then had the fortune to have Aubert de Villaine and Lalou Bize-Leroy walk into their Napa offices, completely unsolicited and at the recommendation of the Chappellet family. Thus was born the unexpected right to be solo US imports of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The rest, as they say, is history.

Our first focus will be on an old favorite, Champagne Gosset. Rooted in the historic village of Aÿ in the Côte des Blancs, Champagne Gosset traces its origins back more than five centuries, proudly standing as the oldest wine house in Champagne. This is a house that predates the intentional sparkle we now associate with the region. At its core, their philosophy has always been about wine first, bubbles second. That perspective still defines their style today, and it’s exactly what I love about their wines.

NV Champagne Gosset Grande Réserve Brut reflects that heritage with remarkable clarity. By deliberately avoiding malolactic fermentation and allowing for extended aging on the lees, the house preserves a vibrant acidity while also building a rich, robust and layered wine. It’s this balance of richness and finesse that makes it great wine, especially for those who appreciate Champagne not just as a celebratory drink, but as a serious, terroir-driven wine.

92 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
"Displaying a bright straw hue, the NV Champagne Grande Reserve Brut is a blend of 45% each Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with a splash of Meunier. It’s a gorgeous wine, showcasing the estate's freshness and charm, with a pillowy and elegant profile. Notes of ripe peach, tangerine, fresh flowers, and fresh pastry are present. Supple and inviting, it offers a creamy mousse with a silky texture and notes of almond pastry through the finish."
