Maker's Mark Distillery in Loretto, Kentucky, was founded in 1953 by Bill Samuels, Sr., who revolutionized his family's bourbon recipe by using red winter wheat for a smoother, sweeter flavor. The distillery is renowned for its signature red wax-sealed bottles, a touch added by Samuels’ wife, Margie. In 2015, Maker's Mark introduced the Private Select program, allowing participants to customize their own bourbon using a mix of five proprietary oak staves, resulting in countless unique flavor profiles while retaining the brand's signature smoothness. In 2017, Ken Gordon and Holly Seidewand crafted their first Private Select barrel, an exciting, hands-on blending experience. This barrel follows a tradition of widely popular Old Elk picks, known for their exceptional quality. Aromas of honey, clove, cinnamon, and marzipan lead into bold palate notes of black pepper, maple, and spice, finishing with dry, complex layers of oak, cedar, tobacco, and vanilla.
