Lazio e Toscana MasterClass with Famiglia Cotarella
From the rolling hills of Umbria—known as the “Green Heart” of Italy—Famiglia Cotarella represents three generations of passion, innovation, and deep respect for the land. With vineyards spanning Umbria, Lazio, and Montalcino, the family crafts both classic Italian blends and elegant single-varietal expressions, including Merlot and Sangiovese.
The story begins in 1920 with Antonio and Domenico Cotarella, humble grape growers in Monterubiaglio. Decades later, brothers Renzo Cotarella and Riccardo Cotarella founded Falesco with a bold vision: to revive nearly forgotten native grape varieties and elevate Central Italy’s winemaking reputation. Today, that vision is carried forward by the next generation—Dominga, Marta, and Enrica—who have redefined the estate under the Famiglia Cotarella name, placing family and terroir at the center of every bottle.
At the core of their wines lies the historic Tuscia region, once the heartland of the Etruscan civilization. The flagship estate, perched at 1,500 feet between Umbria and Lazio, benefits from volcanic soils and a unique microclimate shaped by nearby Lake Bolsena and the hills of Orvieto. This environment yields wines of depth, structure, and unmistakable sense of place.
Under the guidance of head winemaker Pier Paolo Chiasso, a protégé of Riccardo Cotarella, the estate balances tradition with innovation—exploring new terroirs while championing native varietals and sustainable practices. The winery is proudly Equalitas certified, reflecting its commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
In 2017, the family expanded into Tuscany with the acquisition of Le Macioche in the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino appellation. There, estate-grown Sangiovese Grosso is crafted into wines of remarkable elegance and longevity, honoring one of Italy’s most revered winemaking traditions.
Export Director and native Tuscan, Andrea Leone is proud to introduce Famiglia Cotarella wines—an authentic expression of heritage, innovation, and the enduring bond between family and land and a true taste of Central Italy.
