Piero Busso is one of the great contemporary names of the Barbaresco appellation.

Though the Busso family has long been respected, Piero has been at the helm since 2010, ushering in a new era defined by deeper precision, regenerative farming, and a bold ambition to position Barbaresco among the world’s most profound fine wines. Rooted firmly in tradition yet never confined by it, Piero views his work within a global context. He draws inspiration from regions such as Burgundy and measures his wines against the legends of the fine wine canon. He often speaks about his appreciation for challenging vintages—believing these demanding years yield the most personal, hard-fought, and ultimately compelling expressions.

The majority of the Busso vineyards lie in Neive, in northern Barbaresco, where blue marl (Sant’Agata) soils dominate. Notable sites include Mondino in Balluri, as well as Gallina and Vigna Borgese within Albesani. The estate’s only parcel outside Neive is San Stunet in Treiso, a 400-meter-high site that produces a particularly fresh, tension-driven expression.

In the vineyard, Pier operates on the far end of the natural spectrum. Farming has always been organic, with sprays kept to the absolute minimum and applied only when necessary. Biodiversity and regenerative practices are central: cover crops flourish, grass is left unmowed, and each vine is pruned individually. In the cellar, he favors long, slow macerations, gentle handling, and fermentations driven exclusively by native yeasts.

Piero is also experimenting with “zero-zero” Barbaresco—an endeavor reminiscent of innovation among top growers in Burgundy—releasing these wines only when they meet his exacting standards.

This masterclass will be led by importer Jace Chaffee of Vine Farmer, who will guide guests through a focused exploration of Busso’s sites, philosophy, and vintages. This seminar offers a rare opportunity to examine how one grower is pushing the boundaries of natural farming while remaining uncompromising in the pursuit of truly exceptional wine.
