Sancerre Winemaker MasterClass feat. Dom. Lucien Crochet
Join us for an exceptional exploration of Sancerre with Laurence Crochet of Domaine Lucien Crochet, presented in conjunction with Rosenthal Wine Merchant, the estate’s longtime U.S. importer.
Rooted in the village of Bué, just west of Sancerre, Domaine Lucien Crochet has built its reputation on wines that express the distinctive character of the appellation’s vineyards. The estate encompasses 38 hectares planted to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, with clay-limestone soils shaped by the region’s ancient Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian geology. Through careful vineyard work, hand harvesting, and a thoughtful approach to winemaking, the Crochet family captures the nuances of individual sites while crafting wines of remarkable character and precision. Rosenthal Wine Merchant’s relationship with the domaine dates to 1981, making this a particularly special opportunity to explore a producer with a long and storied place in its portfolio.
Leading our tasting is Laurence Crochet, who owns and manages the estate. Laurence will offer a firsthand perspective on the family’s philosophy, the vineyards, and the decisions that shape each cuvée.
Our lineup spans seven distinctive wines, taking us well beyond the familiar face of Sancerre. We’ll compare Sauvignon Blancs from celebrated sites, including Le Chêne Marchand, and La Louisonne, before exploring the estate’s expressive Rosé and two very different interpretations of Pinot Noir: La Croix du Roy and the more mature Cuvée LC Prestige.
A particular highlight is the 2015 Vendange du 7 Octobre, an exceptionally rare wine made only when the vintage meets exacting standards. Produced from the same three carefully selected parcels—two with Oxfordian limestone soils and one with classic white Kimmeridgian soil—this special cuvée requires intensely golden grape skins, the acidity to balance advanced ripeness, and fruit entirely free of disease or rot. Harvest typically takes place 10 days to two weeks after the regular picking is complete. This wine reflects a very different expression of the Loire, one that prioritizes extraordinary ripeness while preserving freshness and balance. Made in just a handful of vintages, it offers a rare glimpse into the estate’s willingness to pursue something truly distinctive when nature allows.
Whether you’re a longtime Sancerre devotee or eager to discover a deeper side of this celebrated appellation, join us for an engaging tasting that explores terroir, vintage, and the remarkable versatility of one of the Loire Valley’s most compelling family estates—with Laurence Crochet as our guide.
