Wine Duel: Super Tuscan vs. Mendoza BDX Inspired Blends!

Join us for a Wine Duel which harkens back to our Somm Smacks of days past where we invite two wine luminaries to go head-to-head and duel by showcasing wines side-by-side that each side is passionate about.
Fine Wine Educators, Ciro Pirone and Manny Gonzales of Horizon Beverage face-off on Bordeaux inspired blends from Tuscany and Mendoza, Argentina. Both regions produce some of the finest examples of Bordeaux inspired blends (outside of Bordeaux). Ciro Pirone (Super Tuscan) and Manny Gonzales (Mendoza) will each taste 5 examples from each region and then you get to choose which region comes out on top!
About Ciro Pirone:
Ciro Pirone, Director of Italian Wines for Horizon Beverage Company, is a graduate of the Istituto Alberghiero (Hotel and Restaurant Management school) of Salerno, Italy and an Italian Wine Ambassador (Vinitaly Wine Academy). Traveling and working in Italy, England and the US, Ciro developed an incredible passion for wine, food and culture. In 1999, Ciro moved to the US permanently. He landed in Boston, where he continued his wine studies at Boston University, the International Sommelier Guild, the London –based Wine & Spirits Educational Trust (WSET), as well as he completed and passed with Honors the Italian Wine Specialist Certification by the North American Sommelier Association (part of the worldwide recognized Italian Sommelier Association). In June of 2017 (2019 and again in 2021) he completed the Vinitaly Wine Academy and received the prestigious Italian Wine Ambassador certification with Honors. In 2019 also passed with Honors the Italian Wine Scholar program by the Wine Scholar Guild. In 2007, Ciro accepted the position of Italian Wine Specialist for Horizon Beverage. After successful growth at HBC, Ciro accepted on a new challenge as the US Brand Manager for the Arnaldo Caprai Winery of Montefalco (Umbria), the top producer of worldwide recognized Sagrantino di Montefalco. In June 2011, Ciro returned to Horizon Beverage with a new position of Director of Italian Wines in support of their expanding presence in the New England marketplace. Ciro is happy to share his passion for Italian wine and culture in an effort to give the American wine consumer a better understanding and appreciation for Italian wine!
About Manny Gonzales:
Manny Gonzales started his path in wine studies in the late 1990s when his passion for classical guitar led him to Boston to continue his independent studies. Here he worked in the restaurant scene and first fell in love with the wines of Sancerre whose citric aromas reminded him of the lime trees that grew in his Grandmother’s home of Hermosillo, Mexico. From here his career lead him deeper into restaurant culture where he cultivated several award winning beverage programs always with a leaning towards the wines of Classical Europe, Asian spirits and cocktail creation. Manny has accreditations as a Certified Sommelier, WSET Level 3 in Wine, WSET level 1 in Sake, a French and Spanish Wine Scholar, Certified Sherry Specialist and is working towards a diploma with the WSE. Today Manny spearheads the international wine and sake programs at Horizon Beverage Company.
