Mention Domaine Leflaive estate to anyone in the wine business and watch their eyes light up. It is the most famous estate in Puligny-Montrachet and also one of the largest. Its holdings span an enviable 58 acres, of which approximately 43 are divided amongst Puligny’s finest premier crus: Les Combettes, Les Folatieres, Les Clavoillon and Les Pucelles; and 14 spread across five Grand Crus: Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Batard-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet.
Under the direction of Anne-Claude Leflaive, the co-manager since 1990, the vineyards are farmed biodynamically and the wines are made in a traditional fashion. The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand and after pressing, the juice settles for ~ 24 hours before it is racked into oak casks. The wines age for 12 months in 25% new oak casks, (generally 2/3 from Allier and 1/3 from Vosges) after which they are transferred to steel tanks where it rests for a second winter. The wines are lightly fined before bottling.
Since the 2004 vintage, the Domaine has been producing Macon-Verze from a 23 acre vineyard they purchased there in the heart of the Maconnais. “What we want to do is offer wines that are fine and more accessible, while continuing to work with Chardonnay in a vineyard that is geographically close,” explains Anne-Claude Leflaive. The vines are over 25 years old and are also being cultivated 100% biodynamically.
Domaine Leflaive is widely regarded as the preeminent producer of white Burgundy. The wines are built to age and are simply superb, combining richness and depth with elegance, refinement and balance.
