Stunning Value From Perfect Vintages: 2009 & 2010 Potensac

We recently sent an offer on 2016 Château Potensac which understandably sold out in no time at all. I wrote that it was one of my favourite properties and why, and it got me to thinking about the incredible value that occasionally pops up on older vintages of the same wine. They’re not always easy to find, but when you can get them, the quality to price ratio is almost laughably high.
Today I’ve got a couple that are not only older vintages, they also happen to be two of the greatest vintages Bordeaux has ever seen. 2009 and 2010 led to an explosion of interest in the region, and not only are they stratospheric in quality, they’re also a perfect pair, complementing each other like peanut butter and jelly, or perhaps as I would think of it, tea and biscuits.
|The vintages do have a certain sense of power in common, but they express that power in very different ways. 2009 is joyously fruited, rich, and vibrant. 2010 is dark, structured, intense and savoury. If you have a preference, take your choice. If like me, the joy you take in wine is in the thrill of learning and comparison, take both. Potensac is the perfect way to explore- good enough to show you the character and the brilliance of great vintages like these, and not so expensive that you feel you need to treat the wines like priceless heirlooms. These are shockingly good wines for the money. The scores are good but they could easily be higher. These are as easy buys as we’ll offer all year. Take advantage.|
The 2010 Potensac has a high-toned, airy bouquet with balsamic and Hoisin infusing the black fruit. The palate is well defined with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. There is something just a little “Oriental” about the style of this Potensac that delivers impressive body and grip on the finish. Very fine. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the BI Wines & Spirits 10-Year On tasting. 91pts., Neal Martin, Vinous
